How safe do you feel on the Internet?

In today's technological and global society, the Internet plays an ever increasing role in everyones daily lives.  Every facet of one's life is affected by different aspects of the Internet.  People use the Internet for social networking, online retail, personal information management, entertainment, research, paying bills, banking, and other personal needs.  Since most people use at least one of these utilities on the Internet, most people would find this topic pertinent to their personal security.  With that being said, people tend to take a naive approach to their security.  For example, as we have seen in the past, with social networking sites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter, people's personal information has been compromised.

There are constantly stories of where individuals have their personal security breached when using the Internet.  There are several issues that are being faced today that need to be improved upon.  The problems with the Internet vary in their level of sophistication, anywhere from a simple stalker on a social networking site to an extremely serious issue such as identity theft.  As Internet users, we need to be more aware of these types of issues and take the necessary steps in order to improve upon them.

To all of the readers, how important is Internet privacy in your daily lives?  What are some stories that you have heard about or has any type of breach of security happened to you on the Internet?  Also, what are some ways in which privacy on the Internet can be improved?  In this technological age, certain precautions have to be taken in order to ensure privacy, but the level in which the measures taken to improve security for the individual citizen is often times up for debate.

  1. I have been a victim of fraud because of the lack of privacy on the internet. The more and more I hear about the dangers of being on the internet, the less I want to use it and be associated with sites on the internet. But I feel that it is inevitable to use the internet these days, or else you get behind on modernization of the world. The newest thing I have noticed is that most businesses today only use online job applications. Normally I am the one who goes into the store with paper copy, but recently that has been impossible to do. How safe am I when I am typing in all my personal information online? Can only the business's that I am applying to get my information or can other parts of the organization see my stuff too?

  2. While I haven't knowingly been the victim of Internet fraud, I do see some easy things people can do to make it more difficult to have their information taken. There are some simple tools out there that help prevent identity and information theft. One that I use is the option to delete Internet cookies after I close the application. It is a simple thing to do that I don't believe is being utilized as much as it should be.

Other things online I am just wary about. I see these password keepers that in theory are really convenient. But I am always thinking, "Who made this program?" It may be that most of them are legit but I haven't used one because it seems like it would be too easy for the designer to have a code embedded that sends information directly to them.

  3. checking the legitimacy of a product or service is an individuals responsibility, but you can take precautions such as making sure the databank you use isnt some sort of publicly accessible base. in some cases even the most cautious peoples info is stolen. check for the https in the top corner before the site address, and if it is a secure site which is approved by some groups such as Consumer report group.

  4. I think that internet privacy is very important. Anything you put on the internet is for the most part there for ever. I never do banking online, it just feels dangerous to me. I have never been a victim of online fraud and knock on wood I never will. It is something that needs to have more regulations.
